Learn by Doing: Practical Photography and Out and Abouts at Otley Camera Club

Photography is something you learn by doing.
Of course, there are always techniques to learn and ideas to explore, but sometimes the best way to improve your photography is simply to pick up your camera, try something different and see what happens.
That's why practical sessions and ‘Out and Abouts’ are an important part of the programme at Otley Camera Club.
Get hands-on with your photography
Throughout our 2026/27 season, we have a range of practical sessions designed to give members the opportunity to experiment, be creative and try techniques they may not have used before.
We'll be exploring:
Creative Photography & Printing
Light Painting
High Key & Low Key Photography
Capture the Feeling
Scavenger Hunt
Otley in Bloom
Some sessions will introduce specific photographic techniques, while others are about creativity, experimentation and simply seeing what you can create.
The emphasis is on having a go and learning together. You can try something new, see how other members approach it and pick up ideas and tips along the way.
Take your camera out and about
We also organise our ‘Out and Abouts’ — opportunities for members to get out with their cameras and photograph interesting places, events and subjects.
This season's planned trips include:
Himalayan Sculpture Park – 6 September
Illuminated Whitby Abbey – 4 October
Fountains Abbey Deer Rut – 1 November
Fountains Abbey Snowdrops – 7 February
Yorkshire Wildlife Park – 7 March
Bluebell Walk, Middleton Woods – 24 April
Haworth Steampunk Festival – 2 May
And there will be more to come, including a planned weekend trip.
These outings aren't about producing a perfect photograph every time. They're a chance to explore somewhere new, experiment with different subjects and perspectives, share ideas with other members and, of course, hopefully come home with some great images.
Photography is better when you share it
One of the great things about being part of a camera club is having other photographers around you.
Someone else might show you a technique you've never tried. You might spot something in their photograph that gives you an idea for your own. Or you might simply enjoy spending a few hours photographing somewhere interesting with people who share your enthusiasm.
Whether you use a DSLR, mirrorless camera, compact camera or smartphone, there's always something new to try.
You don't need to be an expert. You just need an interest in photography.
