Sports Photography and Maritime History at the Club

We enjoyed a varied and fascinating evening at Otley Camera Club last night with two very different but equally engaging presentations.

The evening began with Alistair How, who shared a talk on sports photography. Alistair demonstrated how timing, anticipation and technical skill all come together to capture dynamic moments in sport. His talk was illustrated with some superb images and offered plenty of insight into the challenges and rewards of photographing fast-paced action.

Following this, we heard from Ian Purkis, whose presentation, titled “The Ladye Doris and a real ‘Cape Horner’”, took us on a journey into maritime history. Ian shared a series of glass plate photographs documenting the vessel’s voyage to Mexico, giving us a fascinating glimpse into both the story of the ship and the photographic techniques of the time.

Next week we return to competition action as we welcome Peter Wells, who will be judging our Architecture Colour Print and Record Mono PDI competitions.

It is also the hand-in evening for our next competition, “Scapes”, which is open to both PDI and Print entries.
