What's On This Week: Architectural Photography with Tom Peck FRPS
This Thursday, we're looking forward to welcoming Tom Peck FRPS, LRPS, CPAGB to Otley Camera Club for an evening exploring the art of architectural photography.
Tom is an accomplished photographer with a wealth of experience, both behind the camera and sharing his knowledge with other photographers. His photographic interests have developed from his early work in macro photography of flowers to include landscape, architecture and portraiture.
Tom's achievements include some significant photographic distinctions. He holds the Licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society (LRPS) and the Certificate of the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain (CPAGB). More recently, in May 2026, he successfully completed the demanding assessment for the Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society (FRPS).
The Fellowship is one of the Society's highest distinctions. The assessment requires photographers to develop a clear statement of intent and present a cohesive panel of images demonstrating an individual approach, alongside a high standard of technical and artistic quality.
Tom's work has also received international recognition. At the 2022 Black & White Photo Awards, his photographs The Tunnel and The Storm Clouds received Honourable Mentions, while Lovers in the Landscape was selected as a Nominee.
He is a regular contributor to photographic publications including Black & White Photography, OnLandscape and Frames magazine. Alongside his own photography, Tom is an experienced judge, having been promoted to the East Anglian Federation's B judging panel.
He also runs photography workshops with Quest Photography, sharing his enthusiasm and knowledge with photographers through courses and trips in the UK, Europe and the USA.
Architectural photography offers endless opportunities for creativity. The lines, shapes, patterns, textures and geometry of buildings can all become important elements in an image.
Tom will explore how he creates striking architectural photographs, sharing examples from locations including London, Paris, Venice and York.
A particular feature of his work is the use of black and white and long exposure. These techniques can completely transform the appearance of a building or city scene, removing distractions, emphasising structure and creating images with a distinctive fine-art feel.
The evening will cover composition, camera techniques and processing, with practical insights into how to approach architectural photography. And you don't necessarily need expensive equipment – Tom will also explore how similar ideas can be applied using a mobile phone.
Whether you enjoy photographing cityscapes, architecture, or simply want to develop a different way of looking at the world around you, this promises to be an inspiring evening.
