Otley Camera Club Visits the Farne Isles

Last weekend, Otley Camera Club members took a much-anticipated trip to the Farne Isles – one of the UK’s top wildlife photography destinations. While some members made the journey up just for the day, others turned it into a weekend getaway, taking the opportunity to enjoy some good food, unwind, and, of course, capture the stunning Northumberland coastline with their cameras.

Saturday was the big day, and we all met at the harbour, ready for the boat trip to the islands. The weather, unfortunately, didn’t play ball – it was damp, misty, and the sea was decidedly rough. A few members discovered the hard way that they didn’t quite have their sea legs, but spirits remained high.

Despite the choppy crossing, we spotted plenty of seabirds en route and even caught sight of a few curious seals bobbing in the water. Once we landed on Inner Farne, it was all systems go! With just an hour ashore, we quickly made our way through the tern nesting area – which involved a fair bit of ducking and dodging as the protective parents dive-bombed us on the path.

The main photographic target for most members was the puffin. Some were chasing that elusive puffin-in-flight shot, others were after the classic sand-eel-in-beak image. Either way, the little birds didn’t disappoint, and everyone came away with some fantastic images.

Back on the mainland, we gathered for a warm drink and a look through our shots, sharing stories and first impressions. It might not have been the sunniest of days, but it was an unforgettable one – full of laughs, learning, and lens action.
