Meet the Members: Sports Photography and Maritime History

Following on from Stan Farrow’s inspiring talk on abstract photography, next week we turn the spotlight inward with one of our much-loved Meet the Members evenings.
These sessions are a fantastic opportunity for members to share their work and experiences. The format is deliberately open — talks might focus on a personal photographic journey, a favourite genre, or images from a particular trip or event. It’s always an enjoyable and varied evening.
This time we’re looking forward to two very different and equally fascinating presentations.
Firstly, new member Alistair How will present a talk on sports photography. Alistair brings considerable experience and expertise, holding numerous photographic accreditations and serving as a trustee of the Royal Photographic Society. We’re extremely excited to hear him speak and to see what promises to be a collection of powerful and dynamic images.
Secondly, we’ll hear from our Secretary’s husband, Ian Purkis, whose talk, titled “The Ladye Doris and a real ‘Cape Horner’”, will feature archive photographs of the vessel. We’re told there’s even an Otley Camera Club connection woven into the story — something we’re intrigued to discover.
With such variety on offer, it promises to be another engaging and inspiring evening at the club.
