Meet The Members – Mary Marshall

This week in our summer Meet The Members series we're featuring Mary Marshall.

Mary originally joined Otley Camera Club to unravel the mysteries of photography and finally understand terms such as f-stops, apertures and shutter speeds. Since then, she has learned a tremendous amount, not only through the club's talks and practical evenings but also from the support, encouragement and example set by fellow members.

For Mary, one of the greatest strengths of the club is its friendly and welcoming atmosphere. She values being part of a community where photographers of all abilities help one another develop and grow, whether through formal teaching or simply by sharing their work and experiences.

Mary describes her photography style as eclectic. While landscapes and seascapes remain her favourite subjects, she has increasingly enjoyed stepping outside her comfort zone and exploring other genres. Her collection of images reflects this adventurous approach, ranging from dramatic coastal scenes and creative photography to aviation, portraiture and documentary-style images.

Family members are often willing participants in her photography, although Mary particularly enjoys capturing natural, unposed moments whenever possible. More recently, she has grown in confidence behind the camera, even directing models during practical sessions at the club.

Always keen to learn, Mary sees post-processing as her next photographic challenge. With help and guidance from fellow members, she is continuing to develop her editing skills and make the most of the images she captures. Her willingness to embrace new techniques and ideas is a perfect example of the lifelong learning that photography offers.

Mary modestly says that her photographs may not always win prizes, but she takes great pleasure in seeing the success of others and celebrating their achievements.

As one of the club's longest-standing and most experienced members, she proves that age is no barrier to creativity, participation or discovering something new.
