One of the most misunderstood aspects of photography is how your camera’s light meter actually works. Many photographers assume that choosing the right metering mode is the key to getting exposure correct, but the truth is that even the best metering mode can still lead to confusing results if you don’t understand what your camera is trying to do. In this video, we break down how camera metering works, why your camera tries to expose every scene to something called middle gray or 18% gray, and why that can cause bright scenes like snow, beaches, or glowing sunsets to look underexposed while dark scenes like forests or shadows can look too bright. More importantly, you’ll learn why trusting your camera’s meter blindly can lead to inconsistent exposures and how to take control by understanding when and how to override what the meter is telling you. A UNIQUE Perspective on the Old Man of Storr + Incredible sunrise!
In this video, I’m at the Isle of Skye photographing the iconic Old Man of Storr, but with a twist. While most photographers stick to the famous “Photographer’s Ledge,” I often venture further up to photograph it from above the shelf. Earlier this week, I had the pleasure of running another workshop north of the border. While on Skye, I wanted to demonstrate how to think outside the box. The ledge is a “honeypot” location for a reason, it’s stunning, but the downside is that you often end up with the same images as everyone else. It often pays to look for a different angle and find a unique perspective on a classic landscape. ⚠️ A Word of Warning: The route above the ledge involves a difficult scramble up and an even trickier descent. Please only attempt this if you are an experienced hiker and comfortable with steep, technical terrain. Enjoy the video!
